New Dining Experiences - Maui South Side

Updated: Oct 30

I love pizza. My past fav was Penny’s Pizza and Pasta, it’s closed - I hope not for good - Latest new try is Black Rock Pizza on S. Kihei Road, near the Library and Movie theaters. Gluten free crust, my option, lots of great combos offered, and pick all your own toppings. BYOB. A plus. Inside and outside dining. Not fancy. We tried it one night and thought, yes, solid. We did it again later in the week. And brought friends…. Amazing. The second time we ordered, we fine tuned the toppings on their Classic Combo. Even better. And the final reason for our vote of BEST pizza? Breakfast reheated. THE TRUEST TEST. Give them a try. Great, caring, and attentive staff. Cab or Uber ride, not walking distance from Wailea.

There are three new places in Wailea Village, and can be walking distance from a lot of Wailea Hotels and condos. This area of new dining is next to Manoli’s and the Blue Golf Course bag drop at Wailea Golf as a reference point.

Kohola Brewing, Wailea Village.

A brewery and restaurant for inside open air and outside dining. Slight view, along the 1st hole of the Wailea Blue Course.

We waited a few years watching the ‘Coming Soon’ sign. Toe tapping. Finally, it opened! Assorted food - meh - the just plain potato French fries are actually my favorite. The menu, kind of strange, and do not eat the unagi-spam Misubi. You will not like it. I like wine vs. beer, the beer drinkers are happy with the tasty brews. Their one Chardonnay is $16 a glass. Yikes. I opted for water the last time we stopped in. My way to protest. They ‘say’ they have a happy hour 11-4, and no wine is on it, I’m not impressed. Go for a beer with friends, $5 beer 11-4 weekdays. Eat somewhere else. Unless you just want French fries, I’d get those.

Spoon and Key, Wailea Village:

A deli take out and dine in for breakfast and lunch. Breakfast eggs, sandwiches, salads and wraps. I only tried it once for lunch, got a gluten free wrap and it was very filling and tasty combo. It’s just under $20 for a meal. Adding them in here as a data point. It's good, fills a gap - need in the neighborhood, but I won’t be a regular. It’s food I can easily make at home. Dine in or take out. Not fancy. Dinner by appointment or something like that.

1111 Nikkei, Wailea Village.

Peru welcomed Japanese immigrants many years ago and along the way these immigrants were know as Nikkei. The cuisine is a type of fusion cuisine that combines Japanese and Peruvian elements. The owner chef of 1111 Nikkei, Martin Monteverde was behind the sushi bar when we gave it a try. He was friendly and had some great suggestions as well as telling us his history as a chef and restauranteur, and Peruvian background.

(BYOB at that time as well, check ahead.) Unique rolls perfectly assembled- rice, fish, Aji Peruvian peppers and flavorful micro greens and more, it was a tasty evening. In addition, we taste-tested their signature ceviche, Apalatado. Unique, flavorful and not too spicy. (They have steaks and burgers too for the non fish diners. ) Wailea prices, but solidly good and different! Attractive, outside dining available, it’s very roomy inside.

Give this place some consideration. It’s next to Kohala Brewery and below Spoon and Key.

Noodles and Rice - A Nutcharee Endeavor

THIS IS NOT IN WAILEA VILLAGE - It is in the Azeka Shopping Center - Makai side (translates to ocean side of the street)

And finally, but not last, Nutcharee, the queen (IMO) of Thai food in Kihei (formerly the famous food truck in Hana). Chef Nutcharee cooking with Lena encompasses vibrant Thai street food and more South Asian recipes - Singapore noodles, Pho, Duck Confit Soup, etc. The Pho is exceptional and I also tried the Singapore Noodles, excellent as well.

This spot is between Nutcharee and Nalu's South Shore Grill. Do give it a try.

Did I make you hungry yet? Come on back to Maui and try some new spots and maybe they’ll become your favorites too.

#Mauidining is everchanging. #New #DINING now available in #southmaui #1111Nikkei , #NoodlesandRice, #blackrockpizza are my top picks but the new places in #Waileavillage offer you more selections than ever before. #Koholabrewery needs to step up its wine game, I'm just sayin'. But don't forget about your favorites #Thatsawrap, #Nutcharee #Nalussouthshoregrill, #Humblemarketkitchin by #royyamaguchi.
