September is the hottest month to me in Maui. The trade winds slow down and it gets stuffy. Head to another microclimate - go uphill is the solution!
The view from Kula to the top of Haleakala was fogged in in late morning, mist descending on the tree tops, rolling green fields and hillsides surround you. Looking the other way, there is a distant view of the the ocean where the sky is blue.
I'm always scanning for the next painting scene but saw this chameleon instead! She is trying to look scary as I got close to take the photo. Mouth open and hissing as she "tight rope walked" across the fence. How I spotted her, I do not know. I was entertained for about 5 minutes until she got to the tree and disappeared. (The Males have the horns on their forehead, females don')
Next stop, refuel! La Provence for breakfast. Yes, a really French restaurant in Kula.
Breakfast and Lunch on a patio, or take away the fresh pastries. It's a charming and tasty spot. We took the dine-in patio route, and when they told us it was BYOB, we paused the order to the kitchen and was able to go to the nearby market for some chardonnay. Now we would enjoy a weekend breakfast in style. They provided
the glasses! I thought we would get champagne mimosas but the selection at the market was slim....
The breakfast menu was brief - crepes or eggs benedict, served many, many ways. Hmmm....I chose the filet mignon eggs benedict with spinach on the bottom vs. an English muffin, and it was cooked to perfection. They add a couple of small new potatoes and a side of salad greens with lilikoi dressing to the filled plate. It all went together so well. My tummy was so well fed with this amazing breakfast.
The patio has a nice view of the ocean toward Maalaea bay if you are near the railing. Note- they take cash, checks or Venmo only.
Next stop was to enjoy some additional view, brew (not me) and music at Mahalo Brewery where they had Arlie Asiu playing an amazing Ukulele. It's nice to just watch the world go by in the breeze with some great local music.
The brewery location at Kulamalu shopping center is convenient and surrounded with the Saturday Farmer's Market up to 11 AM. We were too late with going on the hike and having breakfast to shop, so we visited the next door market- 'Oko'a Farms.
This farm provides the vegetables that are at my home every day. I cook a lot! Lucky for me they attend the Wailea Farmers Market each Tuesday so I can stock up down the street vs. head upcountry. They do a great job providing healthy fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and eggs!
Just this artist's Saturday, a day to kick back and recharge with a short adventure. With La Provence as a dining recommendation if you get to Kula. Thanks for joining me here!
